The Logitech Ergo M575S: A Budget-Friendly Trackball with Limited Features
The Logitech Ergo M575S is a more affordable option compared to the flagship MX Ergo S trackball, but it comes with a trade-off. While it handles the basics well, it misses out on some of the cooler features found in the pricier model, particularly in its software. Despite its limitations, the M575S is still a great choice for budget-conscious buyers who want an ergonomic trackball.
Design: Familiar Shape, Fewer Frills
The M575S has a familiar design that won't be a surprise to fans of the MX Ergo S. Its shell curves inward to fit right-handed users and is tilted at a 5-degree angle to help prevent wrist strain. However, it lacks the grippy texture and additional tilting options of its pricier counterpart.
The layout is also similar, with a pair of additional buttons to the left of the index finger and a simple textured scroll wheel. Unlike the MX Ergo S, the M575S doesn't have directional tilt-scrolling for its scroll wheel or an extra single thumb button above the trackball.
One advantage of the M575S is its color palette. It offers five shell-and-trackball combinations, including blue, white, black, and gray, which is a nice touch for those who want to personalize their device.
Testing the Ergo M575S: A Well-Rounded Experience
My experience with the M575S was similar to that of the MX Ergo S. The main buttons provide a satisfying tactile response while remaining virtually silent, making it ideal for quiet environments.
However, I missed the additional body tilt of the MX Ergo S. Still, the M575S is one of the most ergonomic input options I've used in years, and it might take some getting used to if you're new to trackballs.
Trackballs and Cleaning: Regular Maintenance is Key
Trackballs require regular cleaning to perform at their best. Cleaning the M575S is a simple process: just pop out the ball and use a cotton swab to clear any buildup on the rollers or sensor.
Software: Limited Customization Options
The M575S lacks the advanced software features of the MX Ergo S, particularly the Actions Ring. This feature allows users to create macros and shortcuts, but it's not available on the M575S. Logitech could easily fix this with a software update, but it currently feels like a trade-off to encourage buyers to opt for the pricier model.
