The Reigning Champs are Back!
In the world of college fishing, the Columbia PFG College Fishing tournament has become a breeding ground for future fishing stars. It's an exciting time when these young anglers make their mark, often qualifying for national tours while still in school. And what a stage they set at Lake Murray, South Carolina, for the College Fishing National Championship!
Peyton Sorrow, the defending champion from the University of Montevallo, and his partner, Brody Robison, were ready to defend their title. But even they were taken aback by the incredible catches on Day 1. Five teams brought in over 25 pounds, and an impressive 23 teams broke the 22-pound mark! It was a true testament to the skill and strategy of these college anglers.
As the sun set on Day 1, Sorrow and Robison found themselves at the top of the leaderboard once again. With a sack weighing 26 pounds, 6 ounces, they lead the pack, closely followed by Levi Thibodaux and Miles Smith from LSU-Shreveport. The competition is fierce, with two teams from Carson-Newman University tied for third place.
"I expected some big bags, but not to this extent," Sorrow shared. "These weights are unreal for Murray. I've never seen the lake produce like this before."
But here's where it gets controversial... Sorrow and Robison's success isn't just about their skill; it's also about their strategy. They started Day 1 at a spot where they'd had multiple quality bites during practice. From there, they expanded their search, targeting similar areas and making some crucial culls. Their approach, which involves a lot of new water exploration, has served them well.
Robison explained, "We changed our style before last year's Wheeler tournament. We don't have a set plan; we let the fish guide us."
And this is the part most people miss... their success isn't just about their knowledge of Murray; it's also about their experience fishing for big winter bass in Alabama. Robison shared, "We've spent a lot of time targeting oversized largemouth in cold water. It's our favorite."
As they head into Day 2, Sorrow and Robison are confident in their ability to find quality fish. The challenge now is getting them to bite. The clear waters of Murray can be tricky, and with the pressure of a 153-boat event, the bass might become even more fickle.
"We're not worried about size; we're worried about catching five," Sorrow said. "If we get those five bites, we'll have a big bag."
Despite being the defending champs, Sorrow and Robison are taking a laid-back approach. However, they recognize the impact of winning a third National Championship for Montevallo in the past four years. It would be a testament to their abilities and the talent within the program.
"It would be absolutely amazing to pull it off," Robison said. "We've got a long way to go, but it would be a great opportunity to showcase our skills and represent the university."
