The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans is embarking on a monumental task: replacing 115-year-old water mains in the heart of the French Quarter. This project, funded by FEMA's Joint Infrastructure Recovery Request Program, aims to address the aging infrastructure across several blocks, but it hasn't been without its challenges. Since construction began in 2025, the project has faced repeated delays, from the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras to high Mississippi River water levels, historical artifact discoveries, near-freezing weather, heavy rain, and coordination with other utility partners. The scope of the project is vast, involving the replacement of 1,600 feet of 24-inch cast iron transmission mains, 2,000 feet of drainage lines and catch basins, and 1,500 feet of sewer lines. Additionally, new water and sewer service connections, including fire service connections, are being installed, along with Entergy electric and Delta gas infrastructure upgrades. The project's progress is evident on Decatur Street, where the 24-inch water main installation is over 70% complete, and drainage and sewer work is finished. Subsurface utility work is expected to wrap up within four weeks, weather permitting, followed by concrete paving and fencing removal. On 1000 Decatur Street, the roadway concrete is complete, and curb installation is done. The remaining fencing will come down once the 900-block water main ties into the system. At 1100 Decatur Street, concrete pavement is complete to Ursulines Avenue, and sidewalk restoration is set to begin the following week. On 600 St. Peter Street, the roadway concrete is complete, and sidewalk restoration is about 10% complete, with completion expected within three to four weeks. The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans has assured transparency, stating it will fully cooperate with any requested audit of the project. This project highlights the complexities of urban infrastructure renewal, requiring careful planning, coordination, and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges. As the work progresses, the French Quarter's residents and visitors can expect improved water and drainage systems, contributing to the area's long-term sustainability and resilience.
