But here’s where it gets controversial: A member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation didn’t mince words, accusing the Trump administration of launching an unauthorized attack on Iran—a move that has sparked fierce debate across the nation. Democratic Senator Ed Markey issued a scathing statement, labeling the attack as both illegal and unconstitutional. He also highlighted Trump’s history of overstating Iran’s nuclear capabilities, even after claiming to have dismantled their program during the controversial Operation Midnight Hammer. “Even Secretary of State Marco Rubio has acknowledged that Iran is not currently enriching uranium,” Markey pointed out, emphasizing that diplomacy was—and still is—a viable option.
Markey urged Congress to act swiftly, calling for an immediate vote on the bipartisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Senators Kaine and Schiff. “This crisis is of Trump’s making, and Americans are tired of endless wars in the Middle East,” he declared. “We cannot afford to send our young men and women into harm’s way while families here struggle to afford basic healthcare. If Trump won’t stop this war, Congress must. No more war with Iran.”
Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.) echoed these sentiments on social media, stating, “President Trump has dragged our nation into a major war with Iran against the will of the American people. He never made a compelling case, never sought congressional approval, and has no clear strategy for ending it.”
The joint U.S.-Israeli strikes came as President Trump called on the Iranian people to “seize control of your destiny” and overthrow the Islamic leadership that has governed the country since 1979.
